Hi all,
EDIT The official download link is now active again; the install file has been virus checked and tested to check that it downloads and installs correctly. (04/08/2022)
It appears that the OneDrive account hosting the GFABasic download has been dispensing an old version of the installation package. This has been corrected as of today, but it would be considered best advice that when you next download GFABasic, check the version number of the newly installed IDE (see Help | About GFABasic32 ) against the number posted on the download page.

/!\ /!\
I just tried re-installing GFA from scratch for the 3rd time today and I am still getting an old install version...
And I'm gettnig 2 of these each time I spin up GFA...
Just in case, I disabled AdBloc before downloading, same results.

If I uninstall GFA and copy the GFABASIC32 directory and contents from another PC that is running fine at version IDE/Compiler 2.6.2.2621, 2.38 Build 2012 to the PC that only runs version IDE/Compiler 2.4 then, the version that pops up is still 2.4!
It's as if the registry or some other hidden file is responsible.

I uninstalled GFA. Trimmed down any environment variables that I didn't need.
I tried removing all references to GFABasicSetup in the Windows Registry. I downloaded and installed GFA.
It looked promissing:
But, after running the GFAWin32.exe file, I still get version 2.4!

This is currently being looked into. For the moment, hold off on downloading anything from the official download site.
In the meantime, try the setup files from here (this link has been removed).

I tried the alternate download and I got the same results.
I'm going to try installing on another PC to see if I get the same results.
I am considering reinstalling Win10 on this PC to totally clear any possible remanent configuration settings that might be throwing this installation off.
It will force me to make a backup of anything important which won't be an easy task since I've been using this PC for years without transfering much elsewhere than the Cloud.

GFA installed OK on another one of my PCs under Win10.
I'll try again here (on my "problem" PC) just to be sure. Nope. Same results.
I think my "problem" PC is somehow corrupted. I'll try a full offline scan just to see. But I think a full format and reinstall is on the horizon.
Oddly enough the window operating system seems to report the correct version:
I performed a full offline scan and tried to re-install GFA. Still only installs version 2.4. I will need to start from scratch with a new Win10 installation.
Will post results asap.

dragonjim,
Thanks for your help and concern, but, I think it's "rat nesting" on my end that's the problem.
/!\ WARNING PHILSOPHICAL RANT /!\
To think that living cells are essentially computer programs that can run for 100's and sometimes 1000's of years is a testament to how Nature has made incredible progress in keeping what works and recycling what fails. Mind you, we're talking about 3 billion years of trial and error.
Here we are, with seemingly vastly more ability to monitor the operations of a machine/computer and after about 100 years of coming up with the first concept of programming, we're barely able to amble forward faster than a slow jog before sheepishly having to stop to pick up falling pieces and unclogg the mechanisms. But I love it! The improvements and breakthroughs just have to mean something important down the road and I love being closer to it rather than being a spectator.

Hi X, Very philosophical Are you still getting the Access errors with the new install?

One other thought:
Do you launch GFABasic from the Taskbar icon? If so, check the filepath of the .exe.
GfaBasicSetup only replaces files stored in Program Files(x86)\GFABASIC, so if your installation is in a different location, it will not update it.

Also, turn off DEP (except for Windows System files) and see if that makes a difference...

For information, the IDE/Compiler version number is not stored in the registry but taken directly from the gfawin32.exe file information. So, if you are getting version 2.4 instead if version 2.6.2.2622, then you are referencing an old version of GFABASIC and it is not a registry error.

Are you still getting the Access errors with the new install? I think the new install is OK. No errors.
With the new install, the IDE menu bar had all the "new" buttons I am used to seeing while the "wonky" 2.4 version was missing a few toolbar buttons: (Show Debug, Compile&Run Exe).

It always use any previously installation path currently. That's a bit problematically.

This has todo with the new registry block feature and in windows10/11. When accessing data keys from the registry, then you must use a try catch and set the path with a ending "/" or not. This should prevent to read multiple key at once. As I remember. I changed this behavior already in another program.. but I have currently no access to it. Otherwise I would post here.

I know it's a pain, but, if you uninstall GFA, then, the next GFA installation will let you choose where to install GFA. As Sjouke mentioned, if the default directory is not chosen then some files may not be updated/overwritten as expected. I did not verify this but I assume it is correct.

I again successfully downloaded and installed GFA-Basic 32 for Windows on yet another computer.
Also, it looks like the original "problem" PC is better with DEP set to default settings.

Glad you got it sorted. This can sometimes happen if there is a Windows Update requiring a restart or one that has not installed properly.

I finally got my original "problem" PC to run GFA-BASIC 32 for Windows in the latest version (2.6.2.2621) !!! I lost count how many times I tried different variations including Reboots of DEP (Data Execution Prevention) with exclusions and without then I saw the latest version apparently showed up!
I though my problems were over until I found the GFA Editor would crash all on it's own as soon as I would click on Tip of the Day's OK button to close it.
To solve this - without closing the Tip of the Day dialog box - I: - Removed the Extra Extension: GFAWIN32.GLL
- Saved the program
- Closed and restarted GFA.
That did it! Wham! Bam! Thank You Ma'am!!!
The Drag and Drop Demo - that seemed to trigger all this - now works also!
I hope things have somehow been resolved for good... Thanks again for everyone's input!
