Which theme is suitable?

Yes, for now, I am hiding the mouse cursor and substituting an overlay graphic of a reticle. I just added a HUD (Heads Up Display) inside the scope. I also added a subtle kickback (up and to the right) Next is a magnified scope view probably 2X to 10X.
I like the picture on this one but feel that having static pictures of birds you can not shoot may be confusing for the player.

I posted a question on the itch board asking for an explanation for each. Quite frankly I have absolutely no idea what each means.

This is the answer I received.
A part of the challenge lies in how the entrant "interprets" each theme. (All jams are the same.) It is up to the entrant to decide how each theme is interpreted. The voters will rate an entry by thinking carefully whether the interpretation of the entrant for the theme of the entry is good or not. (One ranking criterion is: "Interpretation of Theme and Completeness of Game".)
I bit BS but I guess I will give it some more thought based on this information....

I bit BS but I guess I will give it some more thought based on this information.... I see. Is '120 seconds' the most suitable theme for the prototype? Is it better to try to make another game within the remaining 28 days?

I am almost done with the GFA Basic 32 game for the 2024 Game Jam submission. I have 2 videos I am posting here. The first one I succeed in saving the world and the second one I do NOT. They are both just demos where you only need to destroy 5 flying saucers instead of 25 in phase 2 and destroy 5 transport ships instead of 15 in phase 3. Also still adding stuff... youtu.be/WQ9-dtpvA8kyoutu.be/ibmArbbdBZ4Comments?

Interesting - I like the combination of different game formats in the different stages.
Game play is smooth. The only thing that I couldn't work out - and it is probably because I am looking at the videos on my phone - is how you work out which of the coloured circles are in the correct position and which are not. Or is the point that you only know when you have them all right.

Correct...You are only told whether they are wrong or right but not how wrong or right. There are only 6 possibilities so as long as you are careful you can always solve it. The game is winnable but not at all easy...Hopefully it will gain some respect for GFA Basic 32

Oh, I think it should, although gamers can be a funny breed...
Getting that balance right is probably the hardest bit of game design - followed closely by simplicity of control.
I have wracked my brains but can not come up with any suggestions for improvements.
I am assuming that you have had input from X; does anyone else out there have any suggestions?

Yes, X and I go over it regularly. We have another Zoom meeting scheduled for tonight.
I have several variables in the game that I can change to make the game easier or harder as needed. Right now I usually can complete the game with about 15-20 seconds left although I know all the tricks. I sent it to a friend/coder in CA this morning who will play it tonight and give me his opinion.

These are the meeting "minutes" I took... supadupagames.proboards.com/post/25/threadYou are all welcome to collaborate, give feedback and suggestions for improvement here or there, where-ever you prefer.
Be advided that we'll only be posting the highlights of development here.

Just an FYI: I can change the following very easily:
Phase 2: Max quantity of flying saucers Speed of flying saucers how often laser cannons can be fired
Phase 3: Max quantity of fish Speed of fish Speed of transport ships How often a torpedo can be deployed Speed of torpedos How often a depth charge can be deployed Speed of depth charges How far down the transport ships can see
Probably a couple of others I am not thinking of this early in the morning

Maybe that is one feature you could add to the program: the ability to customise the experience?
Either that, or create three or four levels of difficulty?

My feelings:
Discussios in the forum(https://supadupagames.proboards.com/)are advanced! larrybtoys and Xavier are so serious about this game project! The game project makes this forum look really interesting! I sincerely hope that forum members will continue to make good entries for BASIC jams in the future.

I am continuing to make changes/improvements to the Game Jam game entry based on feedback I have received. Just last night the verbiage has been changed in the Phase 2 Classified document & a spelling error fixed in the Phase 3 doc. All 3 classified documents use the word CLOSE instead of EXIT now. I added a KILL counter to Phase 2 & 3 screens to keep track of when the Phase will end. This was based on feedback I received from CO.
As far as difficulty levels, I am holding off for now. Even after writing the game and playing it dozens of times I can complete the game and save the world only about 50-60% of the time so I feel the game is doing it's job.
Once I feel there will be no additional changes or features I will post a video of the full 120 second game.
X and I will be meeting again Saturday night to discuss progress.
P.S. I added a large GB32 logo on the main title screen which will eventually be clickable.

Here is a short (under 3 minutes) video of where the Game Jam submission is so far. Sadly I ran out of time just before I would have saved the world....LOL youtu.be/VvEpRb9y74E

After the current events, I thought it wise to take down my videos about firearm use. If only to imply it's not the only thing that can be done in computer games.

To be honest, unless there are plans for a massive recall of Call of Duty and its like, I would not be concerned about your videos.
My advice is to keep the videos up as they do not promote shooting people or ex-Presidents, but what has been a necessary task carried out by farmers for centuries now and actually helps the smaller birds thrive as well.

Upon review of another gamer I work with I made several changes to the Game Jam entry game "120 Seconds to save the World"
> In phase 1 where you need to break the 3-digit code, the text on the left side of the screen is now a green dot matrix style font
> In phase 3 where you are in a submarine, the right side of the screen now looks like a submarine control panel
> Also in phase 3, as damage to the submarine increases, there are cracks that appear in the glass of the damage display
I am still looking for additional ideas...

I thought I would post a new video with the state of the game development as of now. I will be planning on submitting it to the contest within 1 week so let me know if there's anything liked or disliked soon. youtu.be/h0flelz0b44

Hey, I got a chance to play ‘120 secs to save the world’.
You’ve done a really cool job with it! It’s clear you’ve got a knack for this.
Keep up the good work and continue to enjoy what you’re doing. Cheers!
This will definitely raise the profile of GFA-BASIC 32 for WINDOWS in the GAME JAM community!
